So if you give somebody a space, all they want to do is figure out how to do a heist in there. The bank robbers, who were very much an element of life in the neighborhood for decades, have been gone for 15 years, replaced by a new Charlestown where gentrification has taken hold and the more accurate stereotype of the moment is: Oh, you must be a yuppie. Hes just great. Affleck didnt just direct, he played the lead alongside a cast of present and future superstars and locals. So we had access to all of the underneath [of it], because thats where we shot a lot of it. Although we dont have the exact figures for Charlestowns crime rate in the 90s, statistics suggest that there was indeed a surge in the rate of robberies in Colin Burch (vice president of marketing and broadcasting, Boston Red Sox): We had filmed a number of movies before at Fenway, starting with Fever Pitch, and we did Ted, and RIPD, and Moneyball. Theres something so tomb-like and archaic about Fenway. Affleck: There tend to be trends and people feel like at first its fresh, and then its kind of something they like, and then it becomes something that people get tired of. And Major League Baseball was open to itthat was what I was really afraid of. Hamm: He is a favorite son of Boston for a very good reason. And so Adrian developed it for quite some time. Besides being the lovable and erudite wrinkle in the scheme, she is not a townie, someone who was raised in the neighborhood. It would go from completely quiet at 5 oclock in the morning to suddenly its like doing theater on a massive scale. So I was thrilled. Affleck: That was fascinating.
